I’ve been a member of mastermind teams since my third year in business. I had no idea what I was missing when I first discovered this concept. Every meeting – a breakthrough or a “million-dollar” idea.
What does it take to create your own mastermind?
After being a member of at least six different teams in the last seven years, here’s what I learned:
1. Connect in person first. The true magic of the mastermind experience can only happen when people are comfortable with each other, like and trust each other, and have connected in a personal level first.
2. Meet at least once a month. The momentum of regular mastermind meetings creates accountability and drive, and keeps that personal connection growing.
3. Designate a timer. Nothing is more frustrating than having one member dominate the meetings, while others never get a chance to ask for help.
4. Don’t take “stray cats.” Invite new members only after discussing it with your team mates. When a jelled team adds new people it might ruin the dynamics of
the entire group.
5. Really care. In order for any mastermind team to work, each member must truly care about the success of other members. If you don’t feel like you care, you’re in the wrong group.
6. Mastermind with the like-minded. I remember one mastermind team made me feel like nothing was relevant to me. I felt completely out of place – I couldn’t help anyone, and I couldn’t be helped. I left the group within a month. Find those who are aligned with your thinking, business, and goals.
